John Deere Reviews / 2005 John Deere 3720 Tractor
Review by jcmseven from Hazelwood, North Carolina
Posted 03/28/2005

I am writing a review of the new 3720 John Deere mid-frame tractor. I now have 12 hours on the machine, and have done various tasks with it. I feel I can offer a good initial impression for those who may consider this machine. I previously owned a 4310 John Deere and traded for the 3720. It is, as all of them are, an E hydro machine. The tasks I have done with my tractor involve loader work moving and spreading gravel, and grading and leveling work to this point. I have not attached the new Frontier RFM yet, but I plan to do so within the next one-two weeks. In short, thus far the tractor has been exceptional. The largest improvement is the power. This tractor is in a different league from the 4310 I traded. Although it is the same size, one can finish jobs more quickly and I think get better loader performance because of the extra power. The torque is outstanding and can be felt well throughout the RPM range. The other nicety is that finally I can use the "c" range. The tractor will pull this range easily for transport. I find that I am not so dependent on the LoadMatch feature, although it is there. The parking brake and key have been repositioned and I find them sensible. The steering wheel is solid and the tilt much improved over the earlier models. The platform and seating surfaces are carry-overs. The new Galaxy "siped" tread tires seem to get better traction than the older R-4 tires, but this could be secondary to the tractor having so much more power. The new styling appeals to me, but I do not feel it greatly improves loader visibility. I do not like the MFWD lever placement, and I have found it at times difficult to engage the MFWD without totally stopping and working the lever to engage. It is already loosening some, and I expect this will improve somewhat. Many of the controls have been moved to the dash and the tachometer is illuminated now, giving a much better view of the dash. The LED information center and speedometer is a nice feature, but is a bit unnecessary in most cases. The information readout displays error codes if there is a problem, but the manual is the only way to interpret them, as they are numerical and prodidgious in number. Good luck memorizing the three manual pages dedicated to this topic!!!! The fuel tank is larger (13.5 gallons v. 10 gallons) and the placement is fine. One must be careful not to spiil excess fuel though, as it can run across the dash. In short, this is an excellent machine thus far. The 3720's main benefit is its superior engine power and markedly improved hydrostatic. The pedal feel and responsiveness is superior to the 4310 I previously owned. With the exception of the balky MFWD lever, the controls are well-placed and easy to use. These machines have gotten a bit more expensive than the 4000 ten series they replace, but in the case of the 3720, to this point it has been money well-spent. Although I cannot yet attest to its long term durability, I can highly recommend this machine based on its initial performance.
