Posted 05/01/2005I purchased the CAT Challenger MT 285 six weeks ago. It is 40 Hp with hydrastatic transmission, loader, backhoe, box blade and rear blade. I also purchased a trailer hitch and fork lift attachments. Two major reasons for my purchasing this machine (vs. NH, JD, etc.) was that CAT has a local shop which the others didn't, and the price (I paid $24,500 with attachments).
The machine is very powerful, especially with 4-wheel drive and available lockers. So far, I've move a lot of dirt, built a road, moved rocks, forklifted pallets, dug holes, plowed an acre, etc. I've average 5 work-hours per week, and it has done anything I asked of it on my 10 acres. I only had one minor mechanical problem, but they came out to the house within two days and fixed it. The automatic transmission is a breeze and easy to use.
The documentation was adequate, although a little sparse for a new guy. The sales rep filled in the blanks, though. I would have preferred a better hood, such as the New Holland offers. The fuel tank is only 8 gallons; I'd like a larger one.
I would imagine that CAT is trying to make a good inroad into the estate tractor field. They are worth looking at. While newcomers, the machines are basically the same as the Massey-Fergusson which have solid reputations, backed up by CAT service.
