Posted 06/28/2005I've had this 790 since March of 2003. It replaced a Deere 670.
The 790 is basically the same tractor as the 670 with a larger engine and tires. It has 8 more HP at the PTO which allows easier operation when using the 60" rotary cutter.
However, there were no other surprises during the learning curve.
I really like this tractor. it's a perfect fit for up to 10 acres if you don't mind shifting gears It starts every time, regardless of the temperature and just sips fuel (not quite as frugal as the 670, but there's 30 more cubic inches of displacement).
Some folks have complained of the cramped operator station, but I'm a medium build so no complaints from me. All the controls are easy to find and operate.
The biggest downside of ant compact is their light weight (relatively speaking). I did think the 790 with 419 Loader and tooth bar would do a better job digging, but I run out of traction pretty quickly... This is with filled tires and a 400 pound back blade on the 3PH. Of course, maybe I'm just not that good at using the loader to dig!
However, knowing the limitations, most are easily worked around
This is a very simple, well seasoned design. There are drawbacks...it's basically a 1980's tractor. But, it's a very good...no..a perfect fit for my needs. I'd recommend this tractor to anyone who needs a small, simple and robust machine.
Date Purchased: 3/2004
Purchased: Used
Price Paid: US$12500
Pros: Solid, dependable, frugal on fuel, simple
Cons: Older design and ergonomics, lower hydraulic capacities then newer designs, a bit lightweight (looses traction).
