Posted 07/07/2005My brother purchased this tractor last fall for general farming usage. The naturally aspirated 3 cylinder, 50HP tractor comes with a 9 x 3 collar shift (stop and clutch to change gears) and an independant PTO.
I have had the opportunity to drive and thus evaluate this machine on a regular basis. This tractor is a fine example of a classic, no frills farm tractor. It has the perfect gear for any task: mowing, raking, baling, harrowing or hauling out firewood. The tractor is sure-footed and as long as you stay clear of deep mud, the lack of 4WD is not a concern. The turning radius is acceptable. Front weights should be added when using any heavy rear-mounted implement such as a hog.
Unless it is very cold, the 5103 starts easilly and is ready to work. Telescoping 3PH links are not standard, but are an essentila option as are rear remotes. John Deere does not currently build a quick park loader for the 5103, so a loader was not purchased. The European style fenders take some getting used to, but actually do a good job of keeping the operator clean of mud and debris.
The biggest drawback is the collar shift transmission, but having been raised on older machines, it is not a hindrance for me. As I said, most of our applications are for general purpose farming and are usually in a set gear for an extended period of time.
John deere has done a great job at filling the gap to compete with all of the other manufacturers basic machines.
