Posted 11/04/2006My X-series is my first "good" tractor, replacing a 4-year old Sears which my new property outgrew. I was originally attracted by the 4wd (for snowplowing) and the hydraulics (to add FEL). Having since added the FEL, I can state its use is severely limited by the 1000psi hydraulic system.
1) 62" MMM with mulch kit is first rate for cutting grass and grinding leaves.
2) 54" plow works well and I've never wished for more traction (even plowing uphill). No chains or weight needed for plowing.
3) FEL is $$$ and has limited lift/curl strength (due to 1000psi hydraulic pressure). Is very nice to have regardless.
4) Design quality and fit-and finish seem first rate. Very comfortable ride.
5) Power steering is a huge improvement for those used to lawn tractors. Very tight turning radius in 2wd.
6) Water-cooled EFI is a quantum leap compared with air cooled engines. Much quieter and starts easier. There's really no need for more power or diesel except MAYBE for rear PTO equipment (chipper).
In summary, I would say it's a super tractor for fast mowing and snowplowing. Being a small and lightweight machine, it does not damage soft lawn as larger tractors would and is easier to manouver around obstacles. It seems made to last a lifetime. It's main achille's heel is low hydraulic pressure for those who want FEL or have ideas of a 3pt logsplitter (Deere does not advertise the max pressure on this equipment---you have to research to find out what the pressure rating is).
