Tractor Attachment Reviews / 1998 Woods RM-990 RM Finish Mower
Review by rbargeron from Western, Massachusetts
Posted 01/11/2002

When I was looking (1997), the RM990 was the only finish mower I found with swing-back blades, which around my place is important. It is really 3 high-speed overlapping-path 32" rotary cutters under a common deck.

Unless your place is flat, I would recommend getting four castors. This big platform needs to float and follow the land, not the tractor's rear axle.

Their brochue says 25 hp or more - but I found that 30 pto horsepower was barely adequate if the grass was dense or wet. I liked the mower so much, I bought a bigger tractor (wanted one anyway)

With normal greasing and blade maintenance, the RM990 has been very reliable - and I've worked it pretty hard bringing 25 acres of my own and neighboring fields up to semi-lawn quality. Woods blade prices are high - but Quicksilver's are cheaper and seem as good. The chain guards get in the way backing up to trim close - seems like the plates could be shorter. Like with any finisher, if the grass is tall it will need 2 passes to look best.

I thought the RM990 was heavier-built than others I looked at - more commercial quality - big bearings & gearbox, heavier castors. It seems to be holding up well.

Date Purchased: 6/1998

Price Paid: US$2800
Pros:
Smooth big cut, even rear discharge, floats well
