Posted 01/13/2002In the early 1950's Ford sold the 8N in many of the same showrooms they sold their cars from. This was a great idea and may explain why there are so many of them around even today.
The 8N was the most improved of the line, having both brake pedals on the right side, 6-volt headlights, a 4-speed transmission with 4th being a "road" gear. The flathead 4 banger, strictly gas, made most of its torque below 1200 rpm and had a perfect governor.
Regarding horsepower, well, the 8N was considered a "two-bottom" tractor, its plow rating.
The 8N's 3-point hitch was category one, long before there was any such designation, and could lift nearly 1000 pounds. This would make the dual-pitman steering tolerable (not much else would) Standard FEL was a tube affair with lift only.
The most fun I ever had with my 8N was once while pulling a fully loaded 6500-pound orchard sprayer I mistakenly turned downhill - only to discover the 2nd rear bearing seal had come out, soaking the only working drum brake in oil. What a ride !
The 8N was great - the Boomers are better.
