Posted 01/14/2002For trimming at field edges, reaching in under fruit trees, mowing ditches and banks there's nothing quite as handy as a sicklebar mower.
The New Holland 451 model dates back 30 years or more, an example of a clever, simple and durable design. It has a Tchebicheff linkage driving the knife - which, compared to the complex wobble heads made by JD and others is brilliantly simple and low-maintenance. Another neat feature is how far the cutter bar moves up and down with just 3-pt hitch motion, no extra hydraulic cylinder needed. The bar follows the ground well, breakaway is responsive and easy to reset.
When introduced, the Sperry New Holland 451 cost about $800. The new ones today are pretty pricey. But there are a lot of them out there - and decent used ones are available from time to time. I think a used 451 may be a better investment than one of the new immitations.
