Posted 04/09/2002With the BX2200 (and BX1800), Kubota has essentially invented the sub-compact tractor. Capable of so many tasks, the BX is likely to be the first tractor for many consumers. When I bought my BX2200, I would have described the decision as a bit of overkill for my situation. I have about one acre of property and had been shopping the smaller models of Kubota (TG1760 and some G models). What made me decide to go with the BX2200 was the many posts from satisfied owners. There advice was very accurate. By deciding that a diesel tractor held the best value in power, durability and economy, one can easily eliminate many of the tractors that could be remotely compared to the BX. I purchased my BX2200 with the 60” deck after studying the inside turning radius. This is an excellent deck in that it leaves a very small uncut circle. The 60” deck is also made out of a thicker gauge steel then the 54” deck so in general it should hold up better. I originally got the turf tires, but after getting the loader added, I had them install the Ags. The Ags will give better traction when using ground engaging tools as well as the loader. It also helps when plowing snow in the winter. Many people seem to realize shortly after their purchase, that a loader is warranted. I think it is so essential a part of a BX, that I hardly think they should come without one. I cannot stress enough to those new to tractors, how unbelievable handy a tool the loader can be. I also want to stress to get a rear counter weight system (and/or load your tires) when adding a loader to this tractor. It’s small wheelbase gives it great maneuverability, but lends it to tipping forward if there’s enough weight in the bucket and no rear weight on the tractor. This is typically more of a problem going down a hill (forward). I have NOT experienced this on the flats. Power is not a concern whatsoever with the BX2200. When using the implements in the scale of this tractor, there is plenty to go around. I have read many posts claiming the same for the BX1800. My only caution regarding the BX1800 is that for the extra money, the BX2200 will probably retain more value due to its incredible popularity. I do want to caution those completely new to “real” tractors, that while the BX2200 is small enough to enter the new market sector of around 1 acre properties (a new market segment for “real” tractors in my opinion), it cannot be understated that “real” tractors carry responsibilities greater than a riding lawn mower. The BX2200 (especially with a loader) must be understood and treated with respect. This tractor can cause injury or damage if misused. This is not a design defect, but simply a reality of such a multifunction “real” tractor. If you decide you would benefit from owning one of these fine tractors, plan on becoming a member of TBNs discussion group and learn away! Maintenance is also more involved than with a standard riding lawn mower. That however is a great thing, because it means you can maintain (rather than dispose of when worn out) your new tractor. The BX2200 is repeat with grease fittings and of course it has it’s compliment of dipsticks, air filters etc. So to sum it up, I think that this tractor is a fantastic value and extremely capable. You will be amazed at what you can do with such a compact unit. The stance of this tractor make it a stable platform for mowing on hilly terrain.
