I also thought I wanted gears. However, I picked up a used 2615 with HST. I'm really glad I have it. I'm sure it has saved my bacon a couple times. You take your foot off the pedal and it stops! JMHO, but if your working around a lot of trees or in a confined area, and/or on slopes the HST is a very nice feature and I think it's safer.
