Have you seen what happens to the AirSoft ammo after several 10's of thousands of miles? My concern is that it may at least partially grind itself into a powder and then you are back at the caking and packing question.
I wonder about the efficacy of lead shot or the new tungsten alloy shot. I'd expect the lead shot to not be quite so noisy as steel BB shot and not sure about the tungsten. Of course, in the 4x4 venue of your original statement it is unlikely anyone running big meat could hear the difference. They probably couldn't hear a tire filled with little jingle bells.
