Hydraulic cylinders are prone to buckling when they are fully extended, like when your curled around a root. When you are curling the bucket the cylinder is protected by the pressure relief in the valve, but when the valve is in neutral postion the oil is traped in the ciruit. Driving the tractor forward can develop much higher force on the cylinder than it is rated for because the oil can't bleed over the relief.
