Grants Pass isn't exactly a small town (nor in the middle of Oregon) and I'm sure that CurlyDave, being the resourceful guy he is, could scrounge up a metal shim.
I'm no engineer, but if that would shim were to fail under stress you'd be in world of hurt. Don't do it, CurlyDave...don't do it
