I adjusted the clutch on my 1710 and it does not grind at all when I engage the
PTO. It only took a few minutes. If you look at the bottom of the clutch pedal where it pivots pull the clutch pedal all the way down and you will see a stop bolt limiting how far down the clutch pedal will go. I turned mine a half a turn in the direction that will allow the clutch pedal to be pushed further down and Bingo smooth operation.
