Well, you don't necessarily need hydraulics but I have chosen to do so - one circuit for spout rotation, another for raising or lowering the deflector to send snow high or low. Some of these functions can be peformed manually if you don't have a cab by reaching back and adjusting a lever or electrically. If you plan on having rear hydraulics for other things such as top and tilt, then hydraulic control is a good option. If your 600' driveway can be blown for its entire length with one setting, you could consider avoiding the expense of the hydraulic actuators.
