That fan looks like it made more noise than just BANG! Best of luck in finding it's replacement. Regarding an electric fan, you might look into the hydraulic cooling fans on some of these large tracked mulching machines. The fellow I had do some work on my place had one fail and he got the parts overnight. The fan was about 24" in diameter and it took a 40 amp fuse. So it probably moves a lot of air. My .02.
