Sorry for taking so long to update this post. It has been raining almost every day since I got stuck with filter removal. I did try to find filter wrench recommended by Unclebuck but one auto parts store nearby could not help me. Bobg mentioned getting engine hot before trying removal and I had already done that although not for that reason. I always run engines before oil changes, however I do it for better oil flow to make sure it all comes out. He has good point though. Yesterday I finally gave it another go with a strip of sandpaper about an inch wide wrapped around filter between wrench band and filter. This was mentioned to me by old timer I happened to talk to at nearby chain saw repair shop. It worked! I went very slowly and after about 4 or 5 turns an inch or so at a time, it loosened up! What a relief.
Anyway, thanks to all of you who replied with ideas. It was really appreciated. What a great resource this site is.
