Sounds like you were able to get the filter off.
I have an 1815 tractor and I had the same problem on my first oil change, but I couldn't get a band type wrench on the filter just not enough room.
I found a different type of filter wrench that worked pretty well.
It's adjustable for different sizes and gets a good grip on the filter.
