I have a Zanon 32" brush mower making a plinking noise and spitting gear oil inside the gear box, and I don't know if this is normal or not. I will try to describe it as best I can.

If you're kneeling in front of the mower with the gear box open, you can see that the main gear (the one that is turned directly by the PTO) has a small rectangle notched out on the inner diameter where it contacts the shaft from the PTO.

Rotating the blades by hand, when this groove reaches the 2 o'clock position, there is a plinking sound, and oil spits forward and backwards out of the groove.

When the mower is running, the plinking is hard to notice over the sound of the engine, but if I listen for it I can hear it. It's very fast, of course, as it plinks on every rotation. When I first became aware of it, I thought it was metal rattling from a bolt coming loose.

Is this normal? And if so, what is going on here?
