The only problem I see with going vertical is that some of the exhaust might end up getting sucked into the cab via the A/C system. That probably would not be a good thing either so I'll have to give this some more thought.

You won't get any exhaust into the cab at all. The filters are on the back of the cab, not in the front. Absolutley no fumes at all, that is not even an issue to be concerned about.
