Have a 12 ft. John Deere cultipacker and the front arbor shaft keeps
braking. Getting expensive. Anyone been there and have a solution ?

Never seen that particular JD model. Have ta guess that it's similar to a Brillion...? Is the shaft a thru-shaft that runs the length of the packing rings or mid length?

If that's the case, I'd want to know if the tool-bar or frame has been tweaked and is out of alignment enough that's it causing early failure.

Brainstorming here... drop the shaft and try to center a lazer level pointer (like the kind to shoot a foundation with) at the center of the shaft and shoot from one side to the other. Should be a straight line - or darn close. Could also use the lazer to check the plumb line of the tool bar or frame, too.

Do you have the center support bearing? Ken Sweet

The pipe that the rollers run on has to be shimmed up tightly between the 3 support bearings. You can't have the arbor bolt tight with the support pipe loose and rattling. The bolt won't have the strength to do its job alone. Having the pipe trapped tightly adds significantly to the strength of the assembly. Deere has square bore washers to take up the needed space, and the bearings mount in slotted holes to give a little adjustment there. Tighten the middle bearing mount, tighten the gang bolt with the outer bearings a little loose in their mounts, then tighten the outer bearing mount bolts.

Thanks for that suggestion. Found the frame was out of straight 1 1/8 inch must have
hit something in the field. Could that have broken the axle ?

To Sweet tractors - yes, the bearings are there. Looking into possible frame damage.

To Rick B - Sounds like a very possible solution. I am going to make sure we do that
when we reassemble the unit. Thanks for the info. Steve Moyer
