What\'s under that rotary cutter?

I'm trying to decide on rotary cutter vs. finish mower for my yet-to-be-purchased tractor. I assume that a 3pt hitch finish mower has 3 or more non-overlapping blades beneath it in some kind of non linear arrangement just like I have on my riding mower (3 blades in a triangular arrangement). However, I don't have any idea what you see beneath a rotary cutter. Could someone enlighten me? Thanks.

I have a couple of small 6ft. bushhogs. Mine have 2 short dull as fro's blades on opposite sides of each other.

Yup, that's what it looks like under there. Under mine there's also lots of fossilized grass and stuff.

I don't think we really want to get into the limits of JMIII's picture files. /w3tcompact/icons/tongue.gif

Really, really nice rotary John !!!! ( mine is a 472 )

Do you occasionally have to flatten the blades to keep them free-swinging? Mine got smacked at some point and one was bent a little at the hole. Also like the two castors - just one on the 6 footer.

Re: What\'s under that rotary cutter?

Just one little note here. It may not be obvious from John's picture of the underside of his rotary cutter, but those blades are hinged, or free-swinging. If they hit something really big, they will swing back instead of destroying themselves.

Re: What\'s under that rotary cutter?

I would worry about the bent blade cracking at the hole and eventually flying off which could ruin your day. JM pointed out to me that replacment blades are pretty cheap and then you have fresh ,sharp, straight and balanced blades.
