I'm thinking of putting up a three board black board fence on the road frontage of my property. What size post hold auger will I need? What does a post hole digger cost? Would I be better off renting or buying? I have a B-7500 and my land is full of limestone and clay will the tractor handle the hole digging? All replies are welcomed.

CROWN, RENTING OR BUYING DEPENDS ON HOW MUCH OF A FENCE YOU'RE GOING TO BE PUTTING UP. I RECENTLY BOUGHT A BUSH HOG BRAND MODEL 2101 WITH A 9 INCH AUGER FOR 650.00,AND THAT WAS AFTER TALKING THE DEALER DOWN BEST I COULD.ORIGINAL PRICE WAS 795.OO.
I BELIEVE A 9 INCH AUGER IS A GOOD SIZE FOR MOST GENERAL FENCE POST.ON BRANDS OTHER THAN BUSH HOG I GOT PRICES FROM 450.00 TO 850.00.

You will not have any problem in that dirt. I paid $395.00 for my Leinbach phd with 9 inch auger. A nine inch auger does fine for up to 8 inch diameter posts and if you wiggle out the hole a little I put in crossties.

I too am putting up a fence in about the same soil conditions that you are. I have very rocky soil, mostly softball sized rocks. I was going to attempt to rent a 3pt auger, but my neighbor brought home a trailer version auger from work for me to try out. It pulls behind your truck, is gas powered, has a platform to stand on while digging, a large hand wheel to raise and lower the auger, and a motorcycle style throtle control connected to a brake lever. If he hadn't brought it home, I would have rented one. They rent for about $55 a day.

I used a 9in and a 12in auger, going anywere from 2-4 ft deep. Even with the auger connected to the truck it still shook the heck out of me. It would grab and bind the rocks against the side of the holes. Without the truck I think it would have windmilled the whole trailer. I have never used a 3pt auger so I can't really compare the two, but I think in these conditions the 3pt system wouldn't have been rigid enough to stand up to the abuse.
