I busted a shear pin (at least I think it's a shear pin) on my Salsco chipper on Saturday. It busted when a 6" log fed too fast and wedged itself. The pin was gone so I could not determine the grade. I used a bolt I had available, but the same thing happened again a few minutes later on a log that would not normally have caused problems. Presumably, the bolt I used was a weaker metal. This pin is on the PTO shaft itself, and my chipper documentation lists this as a complete assembly with no details. I know a picture would help...there is a joint near the end of the shaft with a bolt offset from the centerline. When this bolt goes, the joint can spin freely. The diameter appears to be 1/4". What grade should I look for?

It's probably a Grade 5 bolt, but you're better off calling Salsco to find out the correct grade (rather then possibly damaging your chipper or tractor)

Thanks Roy. I had already contacted the dealer, they had to contact Salsco...TBN came through just ahead of the official solution! I was just contacted and they confirmed it to be an 8.8 M8x50mm bolt which corresponds to a grade 5 as you mentioned. Thanks.

Most sheer bolts are grade 5.
