Rotary Cutter Rotary Cutters?

Anyone have some pictures of the undersides of rotary cutters? I've been looking around but can only find top views of most models. Anything showing the underside of various models would be great.

I'm curious as to how these units hold up when you hit stumps with them? Alot of times when clearing brush I find lots of hidden stumps that can't be seen unless the grass is pretty short. Is it just a matter of being extremely carefull or are the rotary cutters that durable that it will take the hit and keep on goin?

They call those blade pans "stump jumpers" for a reason . I have had 3 rotary cutters so far and have only killed one. It is both a combination of going carefully and rotary cutter durability that determines durability when mowing a field. It is better to cut a little higher to discover hidden "surprises" on the first cut. Later cuts can be lower once you know where the obstructions are located. I would caution that new "surprises" appear on ocassion. I tend to mow my lower field with the FEL low to both knock stuff down and find new things. Jay

They are very durable. The more expensive ones have what is called a stump jumper on them. It is a steel, bowl shaped part that covers the bar where the blades attach. It allows the bar and blades to slide over stumps, rocks, ridges of dirt etc..

Looks like Jay was posting the same time I was. You can see the stump jumper in Bills pictures. I was letting Linky pull up all three pictures while I was posting and hadn't looked at them yet.

Here's a few shots of my new 48"-wide KK brush hog after I unloaded it from the F150 pickup with my Kubota B7510HST/LA302 FEL.

Both BB TX and flusher have examples of good rotary cutters; both models have a blade pan/stump jumper to which the blades are attached and rotate. Some stump jumpers are elliptical rather than round and there is some reasoning behind that design to which I can not remember . My brush hog that died did not have a stump jumper it was a straight bar from which the blades were attached and rotated. I did manage to bend it slightly which did affect the balance somewhat (and killed seals), but it was baling twin that finally did it in . It is interesting when two members post simultaneously. Jay
