I am looking into a brillion primary seeder to plant about 3 to 4 acres of grass. I am justifying the purchase by reasoning the seed will be wasted money if it doesn't take, and it's too much work to cover with straw. I was also planning to use it to overseed the existing lawn and the new growth in the future. Will I be able to overseed with it, or I'll need to purchase an overseeder?

I have both primary and over seeder. They both have there place. I have over seeded with the primary but conditions need to be JUST right. grass needs to be short, very short and most importantly the ground must be soft so the primary seeder will give good seed to soil compact. it is hard to push seed into hard ground. I help I helped.

Makes sense to me. I understand the way a primary seeder functions, maybe you could explain the way an overseeder operates. What does it do to embed the seed?

My landpride over seeder uses a series of knives that are 1/8" wide and rotate the same as a tiller, these knives are 4 per flange and each flange is 2" apart. they are designed to cut a groove in the ground 1/4" deep for the seed to drop in. I have a front roller option so the depth is consistant. I also have the slit seeder option that funnels the seed to each slot in the ground (insead of board casting) the rear packer wheels press the slots closed for a good seed to soil contact and mother nature does the rest hopefully.

How much did your seeders set you back? How wide are they?

The 4' primary seeder was new (1 year old now) $3000. would like to sell it for 2K if anyone interested.
The over seeder is a 4' model aswell. I got it last May 3 years old at the time. gave $3000 for it, $700 for the front roller, and $500 for the drop seeder attachment. I personaly feel the over seeder is worthless with out these 2 atttachments. brings to a grand total of $4200, a new one equipted the same is about 7K, see why I got a used one.

Wow, I would have thought the overseeder would have been cheaper. But now I can see where each has their own place.

Does anyone have experience renting an overseeder or primary? What is the cost?

It seems more economical for individual use unless there is a commercial element.

There is one place to rent seeders here. primary is $100 a day and overseeder is $125 a day. If your going to use one alot it would be worth buying one if not find a used one.
