Circa 1974 IH 400 air planter is available from nearby farmer for $500. I know nothing about this unit. He purchased 8 years ago and never used it... the control box which goes in/on the tractor is missing. I wonder if this planter can be made to work economically; do I really need that control box? Also, I have scoured the internet and some people say the only thing about these units is that you have to drive at 4 mph or below. Anyone out there know more?

I had one years ago it was a 4 row 36' spacing. It didn't need a control box for operating it. The blower was driven by the pto and the markers raised and lowered with the hydraulics. It had yetter row units for placing the seed. It didn't seem to matter what speed you drove at, but everything has a maxium speed. The only problem I had was you could not turn very sharp with the pto drive. The only thing I can think you would want a control box would be for a population monitor. My next planter was a model 900 8 row and everything was electric over hydraulic.
