Wood Winch Info

Hi,
Just wondering if anyone has any info on a good non expensive wood winch?
I am in the process of looking for one for my L2800, to bring in my firewood for the winter. I have used them, but only on larger HP tractors? I go through about 10-12 cords a year to heat my home, I bring it out of the woods in tree lenghts all trimed, pile it up and start cutting, and splitting. Any info would be great. Thanks Tom

Vermeer makes a good one. They can pull an elephant thru a garden hose. You almost never see them on the used market either. Spendy too. But quality costs a bit more than mass market cra- from china.

If you search the forum you might find some members with experience with them. From what I understand, isn't it impossible to use non-expensive and wood/tree winch at the same time?

Re: Wood Winch Info

Non-expensive could mean one thing to me, being cheap, and another thing to some one else.

I have used a hand crank boat winch to pull longer lengths of fire wood to a place that can be driven to. I think that one cost me around $65.00. It was a dual speed unit that took a fair amount of cranking but got the job done. I suppose one could use a larger size cordless drill to replace the hand crank.

Others have used 12 volt winches Atv size and larger. Then there are the skidding winches made for a 3PH, I believe there is one which can be used on tractors under 30 hp.

I have a Farmi 3PH winch that has served me well for the past 26 years, it is on a 30 hp tractor and is still worth what I paid for it. So I guess even though it cost me $900.00 26 years ago it has been a relatively inexpensive tool. On average I have cut better than 12 full cord of wood a year plus skid out over 30,000 BF of logs and it's still pulling.

Another quality winch manufacturer is Tajfun. None of them are cheap. Jay
