I bought a used "bush hog" several years ago. works ok, heavy unit with 70 hp gearbox. my question for everyone is how much clearance do you have between the swinging blade end and the outer side of your cutter. there is probably 4-5" on mine and I think it's about time to try to find some replacement blades.

On my Bush Hog 286, there's maybe 2-1/2" clearance on sides. Less than that on back, about 4" on front. Woods BB840 and MD172, roughly the same except more clearance on back to the tune of about 4". 15' Bush Hog batwing has quite a bit of front and rear clearance with a couple inches on each side.

There's about 1" clearence on both sides on mine, much more at the front.

I think it is time you get some new blades if you have that much clearence as you will be losing quite a lot of cutting width.

But I can't really think how they got so worn down as when you hit something it tends to be the side of the blade.

Maybe the blades were always too small?

It is pretty amazing how much the blades on those cutters wear down over time. I just replaced mine and they were several inches shorter than the new ones. You tend to hit a lot of stuff that is pretty abrasive - even just grounding the blades in dirt can create a lot of wear (think about what happens to a chain saw blade if you ground it - insta-dull). Hitting rocks, small trees, and even the weeds wears 'em down.

With my new blades I have maybe an inch or so of clearance. Since my cutter is only a 4' I've increased the effective size from a worn out blade radius of 3 1/2ft back to 4ft, which is a substantial difference.

Blades are wear items. Expect to have to buy new ones every few hundred hours.

Another possibility is that the former owner simply put the wrong sized replacement blades on it years ago.

Do you have any idea of what the manufacturer and model number might be?

If you have the make /mod. # of the cutter .You can purchase the correct blades for it with whoever sells that brand

When selecting replacement cutter blades, it's max important to get the exact hole diameter. Too small is obvious. But too big and you'll get big time vibration and early failure.
