OK, here's a been there done that!
I've was raised on a farm with farm tractors all my life. I've always used 540, cause I was taught that way and most large tractors only have that range and the equipment is rated for it. Now this. Last year I decided to cut the grass at our river place for the entire campground. One of the other tenants offered the use of his flail mower for cutting. I pulled it behind my MF with no problem, just seemed like too much tractor for a 4 foot cutter. My BIL suggested I take his Yanmar over to do the job. Here I go, cutting along at 540 and the belt starts slipping. Well, neighbor had purchased a replacement belt so he comes out and helps put it on. When we had it ready to go again he asked what speed I was using, I say 540, cause that's my speed, and he says, NAW-Crank it up! So I did, 1000 and here we go. *%@#^*&%^ what was that? The cutter bar is now bent like a coat hanger. The cutter bar was finally repaired by a machine shop, read $$$, finally, but I'll NEVER run anything but 540 again.

So, why is it that we always seem to trust some one that comes by and tells us stupid things? We know better! Well, thanks for explaining what I meant by "bad things" and "loud expensive noise"!
