10 ft semi-mount or pull behind mowers

Hello,

I am in need of more (or more efficient) cutting power. I am currently using a MX-6 behind a deere 5205 to maintain approx. 25 acres of pasture
(some of which I lease for hay) and an additional 60 ac of idle bottom Ag land I try to cut 1-2 times a year. Does anyone have experience with 10ft mowers such as the Rhino TW 120, and do I have enough tractor for light to medium cutting on flat terrain? Thanks in advance for any input.

since nobody understands JD numbering scheme, how many HP is that 5205?

The general rule is 5hp per foot of rotary cutter.

The dual spindle cutters (8' and up) can get spendy, but are somewhat easier to manuever. (not as long)

If you have the HP to pull a wider mower, a 3-point mower of a given width requires a bigger tractor than a pull-type of same width. USUALLY a tractor that is capable of handling an 8' lift type could handle a 10' pull type, as an example. But the equasion isn't based exclusively on HP.

Sorry for lack of info; JD 5205= 50 pto HP with MFWD. Tractor weight approx. 6000 lbs. with loaded tires and FEL. I would probably be pushing it, but just wondering if anyone has any experience with a similar set up.

It would easily pull an 8, I don't see why it wouldn't pull a 10 either (3point or pull)

Might have to go slower occasionally, but you aren't really supposed to be racing thru 4' high weeds at 5.5mph (not that I would EVER do such a thing )

I run a JD HX-10 pull type mower with a Ford 7610 (85 hp) tractor and it runs sweet. I can run at 9-10 mph through pretty thick grass. Before that I ran a Bush Hog 10.5 pull type with a Ford 5000 tractor (70hp) and it ran OK.

I tried a JD MX-10 pull type and it bounced too much at high ground speeds.

I think 5hp per foot is too low unless you want to run at slow ground speed.

Gabby.. small world.. i mow with a 5000 and a 7610s.. both have pulled my 10' howse 3pt mower.. though now it lives exclusively on the 5000 while I have a 15' JD batwing for the 7610s.

When i bought my 10' mower i asked the salesperson about what other people were pulling them with. The darg or semi mount he said some were pulling with ford 5610.. so I'd say the original poster is probably ok if he has 50 pto hp and 6k# of weight for a darg or semi mount.. like a JD MX10 or the howse 120HD

You shouldn't have a problem. I mow with a Rhino Turbo 120 (which is the 'new' TW120) behind a Kubota M7040 (62hp at the PTO). I never have a problem whatsoever. I usually go 3.8mph in foot high pasture grass and it never even slows the rpms hardly. I wouldn't want to try to use a 10ft lift type mower though. Mine's a pull type. My ideal mowing set-up would be a 7-foot lift type "bush hog" mower and a 15-foot batwing. (sigh) Maybe if I win the lottery. Good luck; hope that helps.

If your ground is flat ithink a solid deck pull type is ok. My neighbor just bought a 10' solid deck. He said it weighs around 1800 lbs. Paid 5800 for it i think, but it looks light. I have a bushhog 2610 legend was told it weighs 5000lbs but i dont know never had it over a scale. I really like it and fold to about 6' wide. Works well on terraces and ditches dont know if you have any of these though. With only 50 horses and no turbo you may have to start in short grass or raise itup before engaging pto.Mayhave to go a little slower too, but then you can look for junk inthe grass easier when going slower. Just my 2c

I betcha you could find a used batwing cheaper than the 7' lift deck. i got my batwing used.. saved lotsa cash.. pad 2k$ and had to do small repairs.. etc..
