Tiller Land Pride vs. Bush Hog Tiller

As things get serious with the vineyard we will install this spring, I am planning to pick up a smaller-width (38"-42") 3ph tiller to use behind our Ford 340, after the entire area is sub-soiled with a Cat 953+ with a ripper that can reach 3' down this weekend. My thinking is that a tiller will accomplish more than just a plow, as a tiller this size will establish rows pretty clearly, and soften up the entire row area for easier planting. I went to our Kubota dealer this weekend, and they can get me either a 42" Land Pride or a 38" Bush Hog tiller, at about the same cost. So basically I'm asking, which one is the better unit?

I don't know anything about a Ford 340; not familiar with that model and Tractortips.com doesn't list it either. And I don't know anything about the Land Pride tillers (other than Land Pride having a good reputation), but I'm guessing that 38" Bush Hog tiller might be the same thing as the RTS40 that I have (manual shows tilling width of 38"). And I don't know how you could get a better one. Mine's been used hard for 6.5 years with no problems. In fact, I just came in for a break; been tilling and planting a garden.

I have a LandPride RTA58 with a slip clutch. It is a very nice unit and does a very good job. My JD 4100 has 20 hp and has no problem with this 58" tiller.

I use landpride tillers myself. The dealer I buy all of my landpride equipment from also sells bushhog brand aswell. I asked him the same question, he told me they were the same quality, prices are about the same to. I like LP but you can't go wrong with bushhog.

Depending on how many acres you will be working you might want to try this little guy.

It is a HOWARD Rotavator HR 60 and comes in 130", 160" or 180" if you really want to have some fun. They also make smaller units. If you plan on using the tiller for weed control in your vinyard once it is up you may want to consider a Howard. They do cost more then the rest but they will outlast the rest easily and have more options to suit what you want to do. My friend has two Howards that he uses in his vinyards all 300 acres of them. As for working the ground to plant everyone around here still plows the ground, disk, mark their rows then mound them before they plant.

Of all the "tillers" on the market... I've never seen any heftier than a Howard...

I have heard the term “Rotavator” used rather than tiller before. Are these interchangeable terms or is there technically a difference between the two?

Rotary tiller, roto tiller, tiller, rotavator, all have the same meaning but like John said, rotovator is more of a European term.
