Now that I have 160 acres of land that is 100 miles from my house I'm wondering if any of you have duplicate attachments that you keep at your properties? I have 42 acres around my house so I still need to use the attachments around the house too. I can haul the tractor and 1 attachment on my trailer but it seems that everytime I'm down there it would be nice to have more than 1 attachment.

I'm thinking about buying a used tandem disc, used rotary cutter and possibly a used box blade to keep down at the property full time. I wouldn't have a barn to keep them in so I would just hide them off in the bushes behind an old building. I think I could pick up all 3 of those attachments used for around $1,500 or so.

I for sure think the used tandem disc would be worth it because I'm not sure I could trailer my tractor and my disc at the same time. My current disc is 8' and I would have to haul it with a separate trip. At $2.80 a gallon it runs about $60 for a round trip if I'm pulling a trailer. It wouldn't take too many extra trips to pay for a few implements.

I've actually been looking at some of the older 60 - 70 hp 2wd agriculture tractors so I could have a tractor on the new place also. I don't know if I can justify that right now though.

Thanks for any input or advice.

Afternoon Nathan,
Well youve got a very valid point there ! In my case my property is where my work tractor and implements are located. I dont need any implements to speak of on my acre in Ct ;) But I could see a problem if I had two properties with significant acreage ! I keep my Farmalls at my Ct property, mainly lawn ornaments other than snowplowing ! I think you could save money in the long run if these implements are not terribly expensive !

I live 90 miles from my farm. I have duplicate CUTs (Dx29 and JD 3720), rear blades, box blade and finish mowers. I haul other attachments back and forth but these are used the most and easier to have 2 of each.

I live 100 miles from my tree farm. Haul everything every time. Insurance does not cover stuff left out.

If you want a used BB, contact Eddie Walker. He posted that his in a piece of yard art. Might be able to work a deal...

The insurance on your tractor would not cover the tractor if left out? I have no such restrictions. Most farmers can't store all their equipment inside. Some have no inside storage. We almost never lock our storage sheds but my dear mother and brother still live on the farm. I live in the city, but still don't have any indoor storage requirement for my tractors. We did have a trailer mounted irrigation motor stolen 2 years ago. We take the tires off. The theives brought their own tires, put them on and disconnected it from the well. Now we also take the axles off. New 6K motor was covered by insurance.

I olny travel 30 miles at worst to extra land and have 2 or more of everything ,I've never heard of insurance having an issue on shedded or not , Many people around here store 70% of their equipment outside ,Even tractors and combines , Some machinery gets left in the field where it was used last ?
I always shed combines, seeder and sprayer and as many tractors as i can shoe horn in to the shops , Even the grain trucks stay out for winter .

Having more than one of anything that you need on a regular basis is a Good Thing. I generally can't afford to do that personally, but at work we have duplicate machines for critical tasks so that a) if we need to get it done faster we can throw two operators at the job and b) if one goes down the other is available.

Duplicates are fine, in this case, but, also consider, the $1500 price tag for some used equipment could get you well into a larger trailer that could haul the tractor and several attachments.

$1500 + resale value of current trailer = Bigger trailer ????

Provided you have the tow vehicle to handle the extra load.

Just another way to look at it.

I have two rotary cutters, box blades and boom poles. My problem is only one useable tractor and 300 miles between properties. The backhoe and tractor see a lot of travel time. Eventualy the present tractor will stay at our mountain place and hopefully a new larger tractor will appear where we live now. For some reason I don't see that happening but I haven't given up hope!

If ya need the disc at both places.. it may be a candidate for the duplication.. but it will also be the most expensive.

The box blade... perhaps you could set it in your truck bed with fel or boom pole. Boom poles can be set alongside of tractor and don't take much space. that way you only have to duplicate the mower and disc.. unless you can trailer with your mower on.. in which case, disc only.. etc.

I've also seen people set their mower on the trailer front, sideways using a boom pole or fel, then load the tractor and curl the bucket and set the edge just beyond the mower, so that the 'wasted' space under the fel is actually 'over' the mower. Tractor may set back a few inches from normal.. but the mowers weight up front will offset that reduced toungue weight.

Thus .. if that worked, and you had the box blade inthe bed of the truck.. you'd only need the extra disc at the property.. assuming your truck/trailer has the capacity to carry all that.

Last option is to break down and buy an old tractor like a MF 35/135 or a ford 2000/3000/4000 for a few thou$ and leave it out there with the beater mower/disc/box and just forget hauling and just drive down there and use that setup.. etc.. ??

Put up one of those 200$ tarp 'sheds' with sides for the tractor and keep it back in the woods.. etc..
