I am looking for an inexpensive single shank subsoiler capable of being used in rocky ground (shale and sandstone mixed). I have looked at the King Kutter and it is only rated at 40 HP. Heavier ones listed on the internet are very expensive and their weight makess shipping prohibitive. I will use it on my 55 HP tractor.

If the King Kutter is protected by a shear bolt then why not try it? I imagine that any rock that is so big that it will break a 40hp rated implement will also likely break a 55hp rated tool that is not shear bolt protected. The KKs are pretty cheap too.

psj12:

Try Rankin Equipment Co.. I do not know what their prices are for single shank rippers, but their 300 Model is advertised as being 75 "HP Rated" whatever that means in the Sales & Marketing World . Jay

I too would buy the King Kutter or whatever TSC sells. If it bends or breaks take it back

I have the small 25-30HP Rankin ripper and it is very well built.

I bought the TSC subsoiler last year just to bust a rocky area in the hill where I was grading my homesite, had to go down about 3' total so it was 2 full days' worth. My 4110 Mahindra is a virtual bulldozer on dry ground but that subsoiler could stop it dead when it snagged a good chunk of rock and came nowhere close to bending or breaking. I was going very slow of course, but I was impressed with the "cheap" subsoiler, was stronger than I had thought and got the job done just fine for me and still ready to work again.

I'll be the contrarian - I think you will bend or break the KK subsoiler in the first 30 minutes of use with a 55hp tractor and rocky ground. The KK subsoilers I have seen do NOT have a shear bolt or any other form of protection. I have easily damaged much higher quality equipment (Landpride) rated for 50hp with my 50hp on the dot tractor (JD 5105).

If you decide to try it anyway, I suggest operating in 2wd to increase the chance that obstructions will stop the tractor instead of ripping the implement apart.

Please report back, I'll be curious to hear. I suspect TSC will replace it the first time it breaks and not the second. Me, I'm tired of replacing draft pins on my supposedly rated for 50hp landpride scarifier (it's not just the pins, either, part of the frame - 3/4" thick - has bent too). If I did it all over again I would get a high quality subsoiler from someone else, with a shear bolt protection.

I just bought a KK Subsoiler for use behind my 27 HP MF compact tractor. Started out great with the tractor pulling hard but steadily, then suddenly there was a lurch and the top-link broke near the tractor. I guess I hit an immovable object below the ground and instead of the tractor stopping the top-link bent and broke. Looks like I will have to go slower after I replace the top link. Is there any shear bolt I could use instead of the top link pin to help protect the top link?

Thanks,

Russ

Where are you located? If you aren't too far away, I might be able to help you out. (I have access to a couple VERY heavy duty single shank subsoilers for a very nice price, in addition to having one of my own)
