folks

anyone have a seeder or a spreader that may want to part with? Even better would be someone in Maryland that is willing to let me use one? I only have ~10 acres that I am trying to convert from broad leaf weeds to pasture. I don't want to spray chemicals for the weeds because it is in a critial area. My thoughts is just to mow it short in the fall and seed. If I can get 25% more pasture each year that would be fine.

Or if anyone knows where to find a decent spreader for a good price let me know. I looked at ebay but don't know what's good and what would be a waste of money.

Thanks,
Steve

Check out the funnel seeder/spreaders. I bought one last year for $400ish that handles several hundred pounds. You can use it to spread granular fertilizer, seeds, etc.

What size tractor are you using? How big of a spreader do you want? I just finished renovating my lot from weeds to lawn. part of it is in a critical area and I checked with the county and they said there was no problem spraying roundup in the area as long as it was not over-applied. I would recommend that route. It will save you a LOT of headaches. If your interested, you can see my thread here. If you still want/need to buy a spreader then I'd recommend a Herd spreader/seeder.

good evening Steve, I'm not sure how things work out east, but here I spread lots of smaller fields with my airmax. We mix the seed with the fertilizer and then blow it on. nice and even job, if you want to do it yourself, as was stated above the herd spreader is about as good as you'll find. then you'll have to figure out how to get the seed into the dirt. frost seeding works well sometimes. I'm debating on getting an aerway aerator and mounting somekind of seeder on it for pasture renovating, still thinkin on that one. check with your local fertilizer dealer if you have one close by, they deal with this stuff everyday. good luck and let us know what ya did. Ron

one more thing, with any type of spinner delivery system wind is a killer with grass seed, also mixing it with some fert. will help carry it a little farther. Ron

First, check with Gardiner Equipment in Faulkner (near the 301 bridge). They "should" have a aerator/overseeder available for rent fairly cheap and you can drop it off on Sundays too. Sunbelt rentals in White Plains can get them too.

While judicious cutting and overseeding will get you there in a few years, eventually.. you'll be ahead at the 2 year mark if you just disc it to powder, wait for the dormant weed seed to pop up, and then disc it again.. and then start your regular seeding. The keep it mowed.

I'll second the Herd Seeder/Spreader recommendation. I bought one yesterday and it seems like a well built unit. I'll use it to seed some rye next weekend. I expect it to work fine, based on other folks testimonials.
