Northern Fool 3pt splitter...auto return my foot!

The big issue I see with a 3 point splitter is some of them won't turn vertical. I routinely split logs I can't lift with my 30 ton stand alone unit. Even if I could lift some of them I don't need to produce hernia #5, the mesh is holding just fine from the last repairs (both sides) and I hope to keep it that way:D
The 3 point unit Northern sells that will go vertical is rated at 16 tons and I only paid $200 more than that on sale for 30 tons with an engine and a trailer, that way I can drag it into the woods with my Rhino in places I'd rather not take the tractor. Just something to consider.

I read some other posts about this particular 3ph model and it does not appear to come with auto return. One poster said he returned it because of that. That better explains the $200 difference in price to get the other model that is vertical/horizontal. You get a hinge AND a detent valve in the upgrade.

I have the 3PH splitter from TSC. I think its from SpeedCo or somesuch. Seems like the 3PH splitters have lower ratings than the engined powerd splitters. Having said that my splitter not had any problems splitting wood which is mostly Oak with other hardwoods. The is one tree I have been splitting, I think it was a Hickory, that has been a PITA. The woods splits easily enough but it is stringy as all get out. The wood strings keep the cord wood togather even though they are split. The nicer oak usually splits cleanly after the maul has gone in 3-4 inches.

No problem what so ever with the power of the splitter.

Now some splitter works faster. Mine is pretty slow which is fine by me. I don't want my hand smashed. A quick guess is that the splitter takes 10-15 seconds to close from fully opened. I just read of review of commercial splitters/processors that had cycle times of under 5 seconds.

The TSC splitter does go from horizontal to upright. I have two oaks that blew down that have to be near 36 inches DBH. Tain't no way I can lift those to be split.

The nice thing about the TSC splitter is that it is at waist hight. No bending over to split the wood which makes things much easier. I have two saw horses next to the tractor that I put rounds on when splitting which minimizes bending over. There is plenty of that getting the rounds and stacking the cord wood.

TSC seems to be cheaper the Northern.

Dan

If you think splittin' it is bad, wait till you have to shovel out the ash.
