Does anyone have any experience with either a Farmi or Norse winch for three point hitch?

I have a JD790 tractor and I am considering a small winch. I am cutting firewood and saw logs off of my own property which is mostly side hill and I thought a winch would be the cats meow.

Right now I am using cables and snatch blocks which is extremely slow and physical, although I can probably use the exersize.

Either of those winches are very good, but sometimes you do need to use a snatch block to keep the cable from cutting into a tree that you may be going around. I am not to fimilar with a 790 JD but are they not a relatively small hp tractor? Get a winch that is sized for the HP of your tractor.

My only experience is with a farmi , We used them on 80-150 hp tractors on large commercial logging oufits and they always preffered farmi's. sometimes more versatile than a skidder in dense bush or steep slopes but the farmi was very capable and pulled far more than it's supposed to .

Hi Tessiers. I have a JD 3320 with a Farmi winch and I really like it. It is fast, very safe, self belaying, and is set up to skid logs safely. I use a snatch block frequently to move logs in a direction other than toward the tractor and for doubling the pull strength. I can recommend it highly.

Thanks for the replies. I am pleased to hear the positive feedback.

I was a little concerned that these winches were slow and cumbersome. My interest in the Norse winch is because there is a local dealer and I believe in keeping business local, however there is a dealer for Farmis 20 miles down the road, Not far by todays standards.

Thanks again.

I take it you are looking at the 290?

Yes The Norse 290 Is The One I am Considering

I have a Norse 2500, well used, on a 6000# Ford 2120. I'd say the winch is a little light for the tractor, but it's safe for an old duffer like me. I also use a belaying shiv for winching off-straight, with a tree strap to hold the shiv. My land's real hilly and many of the good trees are in the ravines, since the last owner couldn't get to them. I think either Farmi or Norse will work fine on your size tractor, just get the recommended size. It's better to not be able to pull the log than to break your tractor.

I am not familiar with the Norse. I presume it has a rope for the clutch, like the Farmi, so you can operate it from well outside of the cable lashback zone, and the clutch is set for a pull well below the line breaking strength. Based on the link Paul posted, it is quite a bit less expensive than the Farmi. The Farmi has a high pulley which pushes the dozer blade into the ground so you don't have to belay the tractor and I have lifted the front of my JD3320 without the blade moving. The Farmi also has a low pully for straight pulls and both pulleys swivel. Be safe.
