does anyone out there run a 7 1/2ft disc harrow on their ~35hp tractor?

i was on my way to work this morning and saw a harrow at the end of a driveway for sale (wasn't there last night) so i stopped to look. the old guy wanted almost nothing for it so i made an impulse purchase. seemed like a no brainer but now i wonder if it's too big. i can't recall the maufacturer (GB/Son's maybe) but it had CANADA stamped on the frame and the notched blades had INDIA stamped on them. the frame is fully boxed and the 4 arms are adjustable (i think 4 or 5 different options to adjust straight or angled -never seen that before on the KK and other's i've looked at).. The bearings are sealed didn't seem to show much of any play. he said his buddy had borrowed his other harrow and broke it so to make good he bought this harrow and gave it to the guy. he said it was too big for his 28hp tractor and never used it more than a day, he's now selling the property and pulled this out of the weeds. the frame has no rust on it (painted) but the disc's show some rust but no wear. i've priced new ones and know it would sell for close to $1200 retail and that's for the KK models. The advantage this has is the box frame and the adjustable angle.

Anyway, what do you think, is my L3400 going to have any problems pulling this harrow?

We have a 6 footer that we pull behind our 32hp JD. Not any problems with it, although the one we have is an angle iron frame.

Try it out, at worst you got a good deal on a disc harrow that you can resell at a profit.

Next to nothing is almost always a good price on anything that you are sure will be useful to someone, if not you.

i figured if it's too big i can easily double (if not triple) my money on it.. i also knew if i waited until tonight (on the drive home) it would have been gone. just too good to pass up..

i was reading somewhere a good rule of thumb is 4HP per foot of disc but things like depth, angle, traction, etc can aslo affect pulling capability. i can't wait to get it home and hooked up!! i have pastures to renovate.

btw, do green and orange go together?? :D

I pull a 4 gang 9' old ford with my Kioti DK35 with no problem. If the gangs are adjustable just don't make them too agressive.

I pull a 10' JD KBA disk harrow with my cub cadet 36 hp 7360ss with the FEL mounted and in 4 wheel drive. I can pull on flat ground in high range, 1st or second gear. Any hills or change in elevation, I need to go to Low range, 4th gear.

In low range, I'm basically aerating and not really grinding up the soil much. I found that if I use the hills to my advantage, then I can grind up the earth pretty well.

If you have mostly flat ground, then you will probably be at the maximum of what you can pull. Just watch your temp gauge and keep the radiator and pre filter good and clean.

Good luck

Hi maybe i am not thinking right but if it is to big and you got a good deal why not take the last disk off the four sides; that makes it 6 ft then no problem? But i think it should work fine the way it is.

I don't think it's too big, and if I had the oportunity, I'd have one that big for my 35hp tractor too!!! Pulling it isn't going to be an isssu, but lifting it and driving from where you want to use it and back might give you some issuse, but I doubt it. I can lift my 7 foot finish mower on mine, and I'm guessing the disk is lighter then the mower.

If it's too heavy for your tractor to lift, you can always come up with a set of wheels for it to transport it from where you store it to where you use it. Of couse, you can just keep it where you use it and not worry about transporting it.

i'm not too worried about the 3pt (max 1985lbs) but my manual says the max rated "disc harrow" size is supposed to be 5ft and 660lbs. i poked around the web and expect this to weigh right around 1000lbs i'm wondering what implications breaking the kubota spec limit might have.. another thing, i'm actually somewhat worried about being able to lift it off the trailer with my FEL.. :D

Lift capacity could still be an issue. A friend recently purchased a very heavy duty 7' Tufline disk for his 65 hp tractor. Just out of curiosity I hooked my L4400 up to it to see if it would lift it. It did, but it 'strained' and got real light in the front end. But, the bigger problem was that the 22" disks (maybe 24) made it too tall! In other words, it couldn't lift it very high (even with hitch all the way up!) and the front disks were only inches off the ground. So even though I could pull it, I couldn't safely move it anywhere.

But, in your case, you got a deal. Hook it up and take it for a spin! Let us know how it works out.

well so far it's not looking good. is there any adjustment to get the 3pt arms higher? i've already brought them up to the second hole on the lift arms which helped but the front discs are just a couple inches off the ground. is there any room to allow for a higher top end lift with some adjustments??
