Hi, I have been lurking on your website for some time now and have gained an encylcopedia of information from all the guys on this website. My question is more oriented to the theoretical than a specific problem that I have. Why is it that mid mounted grader blades are not available on tractors anymore? I have an old Farmall Cub with the mid mounted blade and it will grade circles around any other back blades, box blades or landscape rakes that I have used to grade my road. The cub has its limitations due to size and weight, but the fact that the blade is between the front and rear wheels seems to make all the difference in the world in getting all the imperfections out of the road. A larger blade on a larger tractor would solve all the world's problems. :)
Am I missing something here? Are there mid mount blades that are available for larger tractors? If they aren't made for modern tractors, why not? Is there an implement on the market that rivals a mid mounted blade?

Because the tractor would have to have a reinforced mounting plate on the midbody of the tractor...expensive piece of casting for a small return versus rear mounted equipment...

The other situation is CUTs have a much lower COG than older row tractors, so the utility of a mid mounted blade would be limited in terms of tipping angle to the left or right...and the pile height would also be limited...Look at a ROAD GRADER to see how high their clearances are...

As you can see, the belly blades are available.:) But I would think that they are high $$$$. The other downfall I would think is that once you had that blade on, you would not want to be taking it off very often thus hindering in the versatility of your tractor.:(

On the other hand, if you want an implement that maintains roads very well, for less $$$$ and leaves your tractor with all of its versatility, A Road Boss Grader Blade fits the bill. There are many other grader blades that are similar, prices will vary. One of these blades would be about the next best thing to an actual belly blade in my opinion. Actually I have an 84" Road Boss that I maintain about 2 miles of road with and I am quite satisfied with it.:D

This tractor grader is built by a Dutch company, based on a NH TG 230.
They use this big tractor, because it is used for haul road maintenance at an excavation site of a cement factory. The soil there, contains the very hard and abrasive Silex stone, so they chose this 230 hp rig to build a 13.740 KG combination.

The biggest problem is that most modern tractors dont have enough clearance for belly blades. At least not for belly blades high enough to match the blade pull these tractors can generate. ;)

I am working on a similar blade, only 3pt hitch mounted, and supported at the back by a Volvo rear axle of my previous car... This will have the same effect as a belly blade because it rests on 2 axles, and the top link makes sure that it doesnt drop when the front wheels go up...

The side forces can be compensated by balancing offset vs. ploughing angle, so that it doesnt pull the tractor aside.

where can you buy a mid mounted grader blade? I have a 1946 Farmall A cultivision with a 60" belly mower. I'd like to swap out the mower for a grader blade in the winter.
any info would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

IH Farmall made a grader blade that mid mounted for almost all their small medium line... Check around where IH Farmall tractors were popular... there are lots of those grader blades around. I had one that came off an A model and fitted it to my Farmall cub F ... they are very handy.... KennyV
