I am about to buy a Harley power rake or that type of rake, does anyone have an opinion on what to buy, I will be buying the tractor to match the power rake so can get about anything, I would like your opinion on what I should buy, it will be for landscape and construction work. Thanks

I have always head the rake w/the knobs are the best hands down. Stay away from the bar design, the bar design will do a better job in loose soil but as you know from landscaping that's not possible 9 tenths of the time. Why is it you want to go w/a Harley rake and not stay w/the conventional tiller/pulverizer method?

BeeBop, I know very little about harley rakes, but from what I have read it seemed like a good way to go. I am buying it for my son as a surprise gift, if there it a better way to go please tell me about it. Thanks for your reply.

I like the Harley Rake, and the size of tractor depends on the size of rake you get for the 3pt. Otherwise, get a tractor that has good visibility of the rake in back, and good manuverability with HST and 4wd. Should be able to get the larger 3pt Harley rake and power it with a 30-35 HP tractor without any problem. I would get the FEL too, as it can be used to scoop up the windrow of rocks and debris lined up after using the rake. Its a good way to go, but the best for you would be to run one first, or see one operate. Short of that, find a landscaper that runs one. They seem to swear by them, and its become a very popular attachment. A show of landscapers and municipal people recently seemed to have a Harley Rake on every brand of tractor and skidsteer, from NH, JD, Bota, Cat, Bobcat, etc, etc. That by itself indicated they are the attachment to be buying. I rent one whenever I need it, and find it to be very versitile.

Hi Jim, First off that's a very nice gesture on your part, not too many Dad's do that so my hats off to you. I think your son would appreciate a nice 3 point quick attach Jiffy Hitch or to simply out class a harley rake just look into a nice tiller and an pulverizer, the harley rake doesn't go deep enough for my taste w/the knobs and the bar design works better in loose soil and if he landscapes take it from me, all soils are not created equal. I believe that the harley rakes are very high $ as well. Good luck Jim and let me know if you need further info. Don

Jim,
I have a harley rake that I used on an L35,it is a 6' pro model(double roller w/bars) w/the hyd. scarifiers.I have been checking around and best I could tell is that the regular T 6 rake (w/single "dimpeld" roller) does a better job of "tilling" up existing sod or hard packed soil, yet does not do as good a job of removing rock as the 6'pro.If I need to tear up lots of sod or hard pack I just lower the scarifiers and tear the whole area up first ,then I go back and rake it.If it is going to be mainly used to install new lawns on freshly spread soil I would go for the pro w/scarifiers if not I would go w/the T6 (or T8) it will do a similar job as the pro but you may need to make more than 1 pass.As far as a machine to run it,no less than 30hp,(my L35 would bog down if the rake was going deep or if I was raking up existing sod)but 40hp would be better,HST tranny, and definetly a FEL maybe w/a skid steer style coupler. If you have any other questions let em' fly!
