Well, I pulled the trigger on a new Befco 6' aerator. The dealer had a lighter version but I decided as my luck might have it that the heavy duty version would work out better for me. I always had to rent one every year and rush like heck to get it back in time. I got sick of renting so I couldn't resist the temptation any longer. I now have my eyes set on one of those sweet looking Befco fiberglass pendulum spreaders w/the hydraulic option as I put out by means of a "push spreader" 800lbs of 18-24-12 and 350 lbs of grass seed this week by my lonesome

That is a BEAUTY!

A cautionary word. It's been said to always lift the aerator when turning to avoid bending what was previously straight.

I got out the door for $1900 including the weight boxes shown on top. They are not to be confused w/being cheap. The spreader that I am lusting after will be $2500  OTD. This is an expensive hobby, oops, tools of the trade.

Why are these things so expensive?? My dealer has the 6' Befco light duty for $1500, 6 tines per rotor and not near as heavy. I believe you used good judgement on getting the heavier model.

I have been looking at BEFCO everything since two of my local shops carry their stuff and it looks stout. I find it strange that you were able to get OTD the HD aeretor for less than the spreader. In my experience aerotors have always been on the upper end in terms of implements. Nevertheless, Befco is cheaper and seems just as good as my Landpride stuff.

I think the Mac Daddy of the aerators is the Ryan but I certainly didn't want to tackle that kind of expense here at Christmas. I'm like you, I couldn't believe the price of the spreaders either. Here is a link to it. I think he's already ordered it off as he knows I am such a sucker for these cool attachments. BEFCO - Products - Fertilizer spreaders - Turbo-Hop 303

Nice piece of equipment.

I'm looking for a pre-owned aerator now.

How much acreage are you aerating? What's growing on that part of your place? How many passes do you make to get the result you want?

That's the one. I wouldn't mind have the model 800, but man 2500 bucks + is pricey!!! Especially for just overseeding my pastures. TSC's 500 dollar unit sounds good right about now.

I rented a heavy duty Gill/Woods about a month or so ago to do my largest pasture (4 acres or so). I had just rained for 4 days straight so the condition weren't the best considering the east coast had virtually no rain all summer. So you had to be careful about ripping the sod while at the same time I had 550 lbs of rock salt on top of the aeretor only to get about 2.5 inches of pentration. Yes the ground was still very hard. I was only making one pass . . . or as few as possible in the areas that I had to drive over more than once. The aeretor had seen better days and it would get hung up so due to the tines being bent which result in the tines acting like a plow rather than rolling across the grass. Ultimately I found if you start back tracking too much your grass starts looking like a piece over tenderized meat. NOT GOOD On maybe two passess seems to do the job nicely.
