I have a Frontier RB 1072 rear scraper blade and, last year, broke the cutting edge while scraping snow. It was very cold outside and one corner hit something and snapped the cutting edge in the middle. I didn't know it was broken until I put the tractor away and looked closely at the scraper.

The Frontier is sold by John Deere but will another brand of cutting edge fit this scraper??

Nobody will weld it because they say the hard steel is difficult to weld and the weld will not hold.

I would like to replace the cutting edge before I bend the blade (again) but would like to have a price comparison before I contact the local John Deere dealer. I have done Google and Yahoo searches online but can't find a source for just the cutting edge. All the links are for complete units for sale.

I just want to know what a price would be online (with shipping) versus getting hosed by my local small town JD dealer.

Thanks,

Tom

Tom,

The cutting edges are high carbon steel, which is why the welders would shy away from it. Tough to weld carbon steel.

I just made my own carbon steel cutting edge for a snow plow blade using 5160 Carbon Steel I got from McMasters. Think of leaf spring steel, it's like that in terms of it's properties. I have used 5160 to make knives, and it's some real tough steel.

The edge can be ground using normal means, but I'm just going to let the pavement grind mine.

It can be torch hardened and tempered, but I think it is delivered at about Rockwell C30 hardness, which should be plenty hard.

You can get a 6 foot piece, 3/8" thick, 4 inches wide for right around $50.
You would have to drill your own holes.

See how this compares with your actual dimensions and any costs you find.

McMaster is hard to provide links for, but I'll try it.
If not, just go to Mcmaster-Carr site, and use it's part# 8644T34

The edge usually has holes on a standard center. The application has the holes on center line so the blade can be flipped over when worn. Standard stuff. Measure the distance from the edge to holes, size of hole, spacing of holes and total length. Then call around the construction equipment places. Might be cheaper than the JD dealer, maybe not. Won't know till you call.

A neighbor suggested I look into making a cutting edge and it would be the cheaper route. I tried other mfgs and made quite a few calls and sent emails but wasn't able to locate a generic or after market cutting edge that would fit.

It is snowing now and will be for the next week or so and I would like to put the rear blade to use. I tried to move snow yesterday and bent the blade on a rock. I decided to just order the cutting edge from JD before I cracked the blade or did more damage. It was $125 shipped and should be next week. I will be more careful when plowing snow this winter.

Thanks for all help

Tom
