What type of attachment to use

to rid our baseball infield of the grass has grown during the off season ? I would like to know which attachment would do the best job without removing all the dirt (like a box blade would). I have a standard pull behind 3 pt rock/root rake that I have thought of trying out but, haven't had the chance as of yet. thanks for your suggestions

If your talking about the grass that may have grown in the skinned baselines, I'd spray it with roundup, give it about a week to die then use a drag to clean it out.

Not just the base lines but, the entire area if the infield that is suppose to be dirt. I have sprayed this area all summer . Spent I don't know much $ on roundup & other weed killers & the stuff still came up. Most of it is dead at this time . Just wondering the best attachment to use to get the rest of the stuff up with without having to use a back breaking (& alot on man hrs) hoe on the entire infield

Drags and rakes get the job done for us, but our growing season is much shorter. We do not spray at all.

Are you talking about plain ol table salt ?? Mixed with water & spray ? Or just pour plain ol table salt all over the ground ?? If this will keep it from comming back, When we get it (the grass) out this time we will salt it. It has been sprayed with everything else . If salt works it will be great

crushed rock salt, I presume?

We used a chain drag harrow at our fields, it busts up dirt clods and grass clumps. Used it behind my old Ford 1210.
Then we follow with a standard infield drag. When doubling up with my buddy he towed the Infield drag with his ATV.

Doing a couple of off season drags with the harrow helps pull up any fledgling grass clumps.

You may have the problem where your grass has gone to seed before you sprayed it, so you kill the existing stuff, but then the new seed sprouts and your troubles start all over.

Consider some of the stuff that kills for 6 months at a time. Seed can germinate 10 or 14 days after Rounding-up.

If so, here's a link to a thread that I posted about five years ago regarding renovating a ball diamond. Lots of pictures and great suggestions from many users.

Once the grass was gone, all we ever did to maintain them was drag a section of chain link fence with some concrete blocks attached to the front for weight. Get yourself a can of pop, sit in your tractor, and drag for an hour. Do this a few times in a month and I guarantee you most, if not all, of the grass will be gone. Then, it is just a matter of dragging it for fifteen minutes once a week. We also dragged by hand before games. No chemicals from that point on were needed.

Chain harrow might take some out, likely it will just help stir up the dirt and give the other weed seeds what they need to take off. I don't believe salt is effective as some believe... otherwise you would have huge dead zones next to roads in areas where they salt in the winter.

I have had pretty good luck with Roundup Extend, but it is expensive and you have to cover all the ground, not just the weeds. Groundclear works as advertised but is also expensive.
