Sorry, I can't help on the value; although I am also curious as to the price of a used speader. I know I paid 650 for a small ground driver spreader about five years ago when all I had was a garden tractor to pull with. I'd like to upgrade to a pto version to make spreading in the snow easier.

Good Luck on your search.

Hello, b269! Thanks for responding. The guy who has this spreader wants $925 for it. From what i've seen online, used spreaders are kinda high. Ground driven seem to be less than pto driven. I was hoping someone here owned a jd spreader and could tell me more about them. (i have never even used one:) This guy says they're (this particular model in this condition) worth at least $1200 ! Please, can anyone out there help. Also what do i have to look for so i don't wind up getting took...................Thanks guys.............mark

I would definitley check the bed for rust/corrosion. Also check the stress points where the chain gears connect to the frame of the spreader. A buddy of mine had (note the tense) an old new holland spreader that had the bed rust out on him where the rear chain drive connects to the bed now it just holds last years christmas trees!! I'd also check all accessable grease zirks (sp?) to be sure that they are not too neglected.

I know the value of these things hold pretty well. I was shocked at the price I paid for my used one. I can't complain though, the thing flings poo like a new one.

Check it out as well as you'd look over a used car. If they haven't been maintained well, you're looking at a whiole pile of repairs. I have mine stripped most of the way down now so I can start replacing everything that's busted, rusted, etc ... and was shocked to find how many mickey mouse repairs had been done. Gonna have to grind (or torch) out some pretty bad welds and try to do a better job than "he" did.
My guess would be the first thing you'll want to check is the condition of the gearbox and the connections from the PTO to the side shaft first ... they'll give you a pretty good idea of how well it's been maintained.

Was just going to post this and then I remembered ... I just saw an almost new spreader here in mid-Michigan for $950 ... but it was ground-driven .. don't remember the make though.

Thanks b249, and Wingnut........Did like you said and checked it out completely. It looked really good so i bought it . My uncle came along and also said it looked in good shape. Talked to dealer and they told me i can get an operators manual and parts yet if i ever need them. Will order the manual tomorrow. Have it stored at my uncles place (too muddy here). Will send pics when i get it home. Thanks again guys, you've been a big help( once again here at TBN you guys have come thru for me) .................................................................."work smarter not harder"........................mark
