does anybody know the purpose of a spring loaded front wheel about the same size as the drive wheel in the back just received a planter this one has a front wheel all the pictures do not show a front wheel any idea where I can buy a extra hopper and parts? this is a one row

The gauge wheel allows the planter to be positioned where the travel of the flex frame is about mid-movement. (allowing up and down travel) The gauge wheel keeps the planter from operating too deep relative to the surface of the seedbed.

Large rubber front wheel also serves to pack a firm seedbed.

Zillions of used around as well and the hoppers fit others so used should not be a problem.

The Flex 71s are a great reliable planter of rather simple desgin and such a workhorse that Yetter bought the rights to continue production of them.
Though different in appearance the parts interchange.
71 Series Planter Unit
Back in the 1970s and early 1980s I had six units that I planted milo with. I found the Flex 71 to be very accurate. I used both the Acra-plant runner openers and the double disc openers at different times to see which worked best for my residue conditions.

I'm sure you will enjoy working with your units. Don't try any sharp tuns with the unit down as you can snap the aluminum housing. I have slid on a few terraces and know about that. A welded unit works fine.
