Equipment rental

I think I'm almost ready for summer! Got an old truck with a flatbed, just ordered a boom pole to get things on and off the truck, and now can get down to the serious business of tackling a big job we have here; moving a huge hill of dirt, full of rocks and brush and who knows what down into the garden area so the good topsoil that got pushed up there will be available.

I can forsee renting at least a land rake of some kind. Perhaps a brush hog. Is rental equipment normally covered by insurance in case I hit a big rock with the rotary mower, or whatever? Can anyone give an estimate of how much it would cost to rent a big landscape rake for a day? How about a brush hog of some kind? I can call around, but first I'd like to find out what people think is reasonable, including if insurance is included or extra, etc.

Bob, not many places rent tph equipment but I found a NationsRent nearby that does. It's been a while since I checked but they did have a rake, tiller and something else, not to mention a JD790 tractor just like mine /w3tcompact/icons/love.gif

The rake was real reasonable, maybe $25/day? The tiller was what I was most interested in and it seems I could have had it for an entire weekend for $170. Again, my mind may be a bit fuzzy on the prices, but a couple of phone calls should answer it all for you /w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif

Bob James Equiptment in Fairport rents all that stuff. I just got a rate sheet, but its at home and I am at work right now. Just give them a call. I need to rent a post hole digger from them in a few weeks and the price is $72.00 for the day. I have a rake I could rent to you for a reasonable fee if you are interested.

Funny you should mention Bob James.. I give them all my business now. Seem like real good folks. $72/day doesn't sound too bad!

And yes, sometime later on in the summer, after I push this mess down and need to clean it up, I'll get in touch about renting your rake. I just don't want to risk wrecking it on you.. there might be all kinds of rocks and little trees and who knows what in that mess. Is the rake able to handle that without any risk of damage?

Don't know about the insurance angle... I would ask the rental agency about their policy.

I rented a 6ft York rake two weekends ago. They charged $33/day. Another rental company charged $40/day. So, it pays to shop around.

The rental place I go to does not carry insurance. I am responsible for anything that breaks or is damaged.
I just make sure my insurance that I carry covers the equipment I rent, or take the risk if it doesn't. Last fall they rented out a Bobcat excavator, and the user got too close to a basement hole being dug, and tipped the excavator into the hole. About $6000 to fix it. Don't know if he had insurance or not. I rented it a week later, and everything worked fine, but the cab was totally destroyed (rental rate was much lower though).

I think either way the renter is responsible for damages. By either way, I mean whether you have insurance or not.
On something of lesser value, the rental company is probably not going to ask. Last year I needed an excavator and Nation's Rent wanted a certificate of insurance to show I could cover a $75,000 loss if I totaled the machine.

The agency who handles the farm policy was able to handle everything over the phone and fax the certificate that day. Luckily I didn't need the machine that long so the insurance cost didn't amount to much.
