Does anyone have any opinions/experiences running a discbine or haybine with a tractor of 45 pto horsepower or below. Do they make a machine that will operate with this horsepower? I will be mowing alfalfa, and would like to be able to pull my mower with my JD 4520 (45ptohp). If anyone knows makes or models that will work with my tractor please let me know.

I have a New Holland 478 (7' haybine) that I pull with my IH454D, which is 40.5 pto hp. The tractor doesn't even know it is there. Haybines don't generally require a lot of power relative to some other implements because they are really just sickle bar mowers with extra conditioning rollers and pick-up reel. If you are considering a discbine, it is wise to have a cab (which you may have) My guess is a discbine would require more power relative to a similar width haybine.

You won't be pulling a discbine with your tractor. You could run just a disc mower though.

Disc mower-conditioners eat horsepower. My 9ft New Idea 5209 ran OK with 80 HP but I could feel it bog a bit in thick timothy.
I'm joking here but I couldn't even pull it out of the barn with 45 HP

I have ran a 9' Gehl discbine with a New Holland TN65 and a TN75. It worked the TN65 like crazy as the TN was way underpowered for that cutter and the TN75 could handle it better but it was still underpowered. I put the Gehl on a 120hp 7710-II and you didn't know it was there. Before the Gehl I ran a New Holland 489 haybine on the TN65 and you didn't notice it back there.

With your tractor I would be looking for a 7' or 9' haybine

Thanks for the input so far guys. I actually talked to my JD dealer and he said that the New Holland 7' and 9' sickle bar conditioners would probably be my only options. If this is the case, has anyone out there used one of these mowers on a tractor similar to mine?

Yes, I mow with a 9 ft mower conditioner on a Kubota L5030 (42 pto hp)

Get you a disc or drum mower and a tedder and you'll put up your grass hay faster than a haybine. Just remember haybines have trouble mowing in any wet conditions. That means you'll be waiting until the dew burns off before your start. You can mow anytime in any conditions with a disc and/or a drum mower. New Drum mowers start below $3,000.

CCI,

I would rather have a drum/disc mower, tedder combination, due to the speed and mow in any condition, but I am worried about the cure time for the alfalfa. This is my first go at this, so I want to try and get the equipment right the first time. Does anyone have any problems curing alfalfa with a drum/disc mower, or beating up the alfalfa? I would think the more the alfalfa is moved the more leaf loss it would sustain.
