I have been trying to get rid of some bamboo or cane for several years. Spraying with a strong mixture of Round up seems to make it sick. Basically I have it down to small sprouts.

What I want to do is dig up the roots. This last week end I put a middle buster plow on and ran it thru the places where it is growing. Was pleased with the roots popping up and then I can gather them and burn.

What I am wondering about is just adapting the 3 point hitch by taking off the plow. This would allow me to not make such a deep cut. Any thoughts?

Not sure what you mean by 'adapting the 3 point hitch' do you mean swapping the middlebuster sweep for a chisel type point?

How big of an area do you have bamboo in? If big enough I would think a small cultivator would do the trick better than a single point, see this thread for pics : http://www.tractorbynet.com/forums/attachments/117481-small-field-cultivator.html

The maybe go over it with a landscape rake to pick up the roots for burning.

This is exactly what I mean. Want something that will dig down and pop the roots out so I can gather and burn them. Want to do a combination of spraying and digging.

In the post there was a picture of a digging instrument. What brand is it?

I use what's called a renovator for pulling roots and small stumps out of the ground.

A renovator is nothing more than a box blade without the blade. In other words it has 5 or 6 shanks "scarifiers".

See my avatar for what i'm talking about.

It does a great job of preparing "new" ground all I have to do after using it is to run my cutting harrow over, smooth and sow seed.

Check this link for a better pic.

If your talking about the one RalphVa posted he mentions it is an old John Deere. There are several companies that make similar items. Depending on where you are and what dealers or farm stores are aournd you might be able to get a King Kutter cultivator:

King Kutter Incorporated

They make two kinds:
FieldCultivator

Cultivator

You can also look at local auctions, Craigslist, classified ads etc.

If you update your profile with where you are and what equipment you have that will help people help you :)

If it is the same kind of wild bamboo stuff we have here the only way to get rid of it is to wait till it grows a few feet and spray it with a very heavy dose of roundup and diesel fuel. I have asked many people about getting rid of it and this is what worked the best. The diesel fuel strengthens the roundup. Just a couple tablespoons to your gallon of roundup mix. You have to do it at least 3 or 4 time but it got rid of mine. Digging it up helps for a while but the roots go down many feet and they just find a way to reach the surface and grow again. Hope this helps.:)

Sorry for the slow reply.

I purchased mine at Tullahoma Tractor here in Tn. It wasn't very expensive I think around $200.00. Contact them and maybe they can put you in touch with someone close by. Good luck!!!!

Heres a link to there catalog......................

I do not know anything about Bamboo....however I have had experience killing Blackberry vines. I have found that the best way to kill those invasive suckers is to mix Roundup with a chemical called Crossbow. Crossbow is basically a broadleaf killer that is designed for woody broadleaf plants.

I have found that mixing Roundup with 2,4,D will also give you a better kill rate. The 2,4,D seems to make the plant accept the Roundup by making it grow faster and thereby getting a better kill.

I would sure try the Mixture of Roundup and Crossbow and be real diligent about applying it.....like each and every week without fail. I know that it does work on Locust tree sprouts....which out here almost become a noxious weed if not kept in check. Crossbow can be a bit spendy but shop around and you can find it.

By the way, I mix each at the recommended rate all together....I.E., if you mix roundup at the rate of 1 oz or 2 oz per gallon and the Crossbow is recommended rate of 2 oz per gal....I put all of that in a gallon.
