Good guess.
I discovered British standard plumbing parts to be the norm in hardware stores in Switzerland when I lived there and had to home repairs.
One of the little civilization things that the English brought to the rest of the world - sanitation.

Indeed. Where would we be were it not for John Crapper and his contribution to civilization.

Thought;
"Oil bath" doesn't necessarily mean that everything has to be submerged in oil at all times.
There is probably adequate lubrication as long as the teeth of the bottom gear dip into the oil. From there is gets distributed via contact, right ?

Sorry , not correct . The outer shaft bearing will run dry if the oil level gets that low especialy when it is elevated whilst mowing slopes . As for the breather , i have made them before for other aplications . If it still throws oil out it is a simple matter to scrunch up some bird wire and place it in the pipe which stops the oil but still allows it to breath . I drill an 1/8" hole crossways through the bottom of the pipe and Braze a cross bar into the hole to stop the mesh from dropping (a piece of Brazing rod works well for the cross bar ) When you need to refill the box you just need to unscrew the pipe .

Now, where in the colonies can British standard pipe be purchased?

I'd use an adaptor to convert to standard pipe. Discount Hydraulic Hose (Discount Hydraulic Hose.com) should have the fittings. Perhaps it is even the same thread as the CCM top links.

Also...
The Caroni shift kit comes with hoses that terminate in couplers that are different to Parker, not sure what they are, but...
Unscrew the coupler and... Ta Dahh, the hose has a (male) BSP end.
For a small number of Colonial dollars female BSP to make NPT adapters can be had from a local hydraulics parts place, e.g. where they sell repair bits for snow plows & such.

So, for the breather tube extension DIY project you can probably buy a variety of BSP parts where you see the Fisher plow sign, or Curtis, Boss, etc.

I think you are right. The 3/8" is dead on according to the measurements I made yesterday.

I live in Canada and it isn't exactly standard issue. In fact, I don't know of a single place that stocks it. Or can order it for that matter, but then I haven't really asked. If I needed some I'd start asking at a place that worked on or installed irrigation equipment. Some of that is European and uses BSP.

I did check them out and they do in fact carry a number of adapters. I have ordered a couple each 3/8 BSP male to male and a couple 3/8 female to female connectors. I'll try one set and see if that is adequate and if not will extend it with the second set.

Before I lose the part numbers, they are 9000-06-06 and 9043-06-06 respectively. Cost about 11 bucks per set.

I'll let you know how they work in a week or so.

Mine, from a different distributor, is 'in' a/o last thur. They are still trying to construct a plan to deliver it to me. Odd in this recession/slowdown they are so busy that they deem it more efficient to delay the 90% delivery payment.

I don't know about mowers but agriculture in general is definitely NOT in a slowdown. Demand for big tractors, combines, tires, fertilizer, diesel, etc etc is WAAAY up, and so are the prices. There is a waiting list for a lot of things. Corn, beans, wheat, rice, etc are worth a lot more than they used to be a few years ago and farmers are trying to cash in big and are spending big to do it. Many suppliers are having trouble keeping up with the demand.
