Flail Mower Let's talk flail mowers

   / Let's talk flail mowers #861
I just purchased a used NH tractor that came with an Alamo 88" rear flail and an Alamo 74" right wing flail. It will be delivered Monday. Looking forward to operating the mower.

I plan to use Flailmaster for parts. I tested the rig before purchase so everything works and runs smoothly but I know at some point I will need belts, knives and other stuff.

I waded through the hundreds of posts, and ended up with a few questions.

What is the URL for Rears? (I amassed quite a collection of URLs for flails and parts for flails, but not a one for whoever makes Rears)
Who makes a flail that has at least a 24" hydraulic offset (on 84" minimum cutting width)?

My main interest in a flail is the safety (much less chance of objects being thrown)-- I have to mow near large glass areas and at 2000 per glass panel it is a bit of white knuckle at times, not to speak of people and animals that don't realize what a BH 278 can do. Secondary is being able to scalp paddocks down to the dirt (some horses are sensitive to the grass during high sugar phases and the vegetation needs to be nearly terminated), and the hydraulic offset as mentioned hundreds of posts ago can be used to do a tolerable job under the fence lines. Heavy cutting the 278 can do (or a chainsaw, or Stihl FS450), the flail is more for 1" and under grasses and weeds.

As for the hydraulic offset, I use 84" implements now, and allowing for wobbly fence lines-- i.e., running about 12" from the fence line-- an offset capability of at least 24" would be needed. Those wheel things that cut under fences are not attractive, I really DON'T want another special purpose tractor thingie to maintain, attach, detach, cuss at... but on one of the web sites for those wheel things they showed an Italian flail that had a 31" hydraulic offset for a 90"+- flail, ideal except that isn't what they were selling (they were selling the wheel thing WITH the flail, and I did not bookmark the site:().

Yes, a flail slope mower would work great, if I wanted to pay 4000 more and have a bunch of additional parts that could break and needed maintenance...

Thanks.

I have a Rears SPF60PK940 with hyd offset. The 940 are the heavy knives and rotor. I believe they would do ok for you, but when you go up to 2" stuff they start breaking which is a bummer considering the heavily built item. I believe the offset capability is 24" as you wish. www.oescoinc.com up your way deals with Rears based in Oregon.

Hey, the thread is only a couple of years old now. Give us a chance and we'll break 100 pages and 1000 posts by the end of the summer.

A question here for you guys with the flail mowers. Which direction does the mower head spin for normal mowing? I have one I'm working on and I'm trying to figure out what is forward and what is reverse direction.

normal is to the rear with the pulley mount on the right Looking from the seat at the mower) left side mount is reverse with blades spinning towards the tractor, alamo mowers not sure if for all types

Well I did it. I purchased a Loftness 90M 90" flail today. List price 6420.00 purchased for $5125.00. Main reason for Loftness is factory is 2 hour drive from me and purchased through a dealer who is a friend of mine. I will be doing the "dealer assembly" for this price. Won't have time to use it this weekend but hopefully next. Thanks for all the advice on flail mowers you guys gave me.

You wouldn't still have the old gearbox for that mower would you? I am looking for parts for one I have. In particular the pinion shaft.

I am new to this topic and have some questions.

I have 150 acres of pasture that is fairly flat but sometimes rocky.

I would like to be able to mow weeds at a height of about 1 foot so I miss the grass but get the weedhead. This would also keep me off the rocks.

Is a flail mower a good choice for this application?

I have plenty of horsepower and would like a large model that could move along. Any suggestions?

Thanks,

Alex
